Someone mentioned the Record Bar. There was one in Cameron Village that had been a Italian restaurant before that. Sam Cook, the great Soul singer worked there as a busboy for a short while.
You know you`re from Raleigh if you can remember the old man selling hot roasted peanuts in front of the capitol. You know you`re from Raleigh if you remember Jack the blind man.
or if you used to get your oysters on the half shell from the old guy at 42nd street from 4-7 for 25-cents... Was his name Sam?
My wife and I used to be regulars. Shuckers dozens were always better than bakers. a few trays of the oysters and a couple Newcastle on draft (back when Newcastle was a rare find in the area, and craft beers barely existed). Good memories....

I think I remember that restaurant being there when I was really little.
You know you`re from Raleigh if you remember Howards sandwich shop and the Wake Theater.
Sure I remember the Wake. It was long and narrow...a little on the "crummy" side too. There was a little saying back then..."At the Wake you buy 2 boxes of popcorn...one for you and one for the rats" I saw a lot of Westerns there and Tarzan movies there. http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=...w=1024&bih=614
I don't remember eating at Howards. Went to The Raleigh Sandwich Shop mostly.
you know youre from raleigh if you remember the old north hills mall and it was WAY out in the middle of NOWHERE!
...wish the penny wish fountain near the Ivey's (inside) entrance. I think it was blue speckled tiles. Across the way was the 2-story Woolworth's with lunch counter.
Being the daughter of a UMC minister, I spent a lot of time at North Hills while Daddy shopped at Cokesbury! (Even bought my wedding dress next door at Bride's World.)
Oh.... can't forget Hickory Farms next to the K&W. We'd go in there to eat the samples.
