Mitch's was a great place also...............anybody remember the best rib place ever.........MR. Ribs next to College Beverage and right up the street from the "KEG"........how about Surburban Market on Anderson Drive and "Gattis's Drug Store and soda fountain at 5 Points. Only Movie Theaters in town were the Ambassador and State downtown, the Colony at 5 points, and the Village at Cameron Village............Growing up in Raleigh in the 50's and 60's was a real blast! Miss those DAZE!
I was a regular at the old Player's Retreat in the early 70's. The Zig Zag Shop was down on the corner. I was there opening night at Darryl's. I loved the addition of the Circus Room that was added later. I still have a vivid memory of Darryl Davis himself tossing pizza dough at his earlier Pizza Inn at that same location. I never ate at Mr. Ribb, but remember it well. There was a small grocery store beside Weatherman's Jeweler's, but I can't recall the name. Baxley's was at the location of Sadlack's, and served a great burger. If the Surburban Market was what I thought it was, it was located by Crabtree Creek and owned by the Earp Family. I bought drinks and "nabs" there often. I also remember the Wake and the Lincoln theaters downtown in addition to the Varsity on Hillsborough St.

I guess so I went to school with the Earp boys, so we all simply called it Earp's.

When my family moved past Stickland road on Six Forks we moved "out in the boonies". Kmart really was the last stop.

Was anyone around when the mines on Lead Mine were not filled in. I once met an old man who said him and his friends would play in the entrance to the mines as kids. He said back then there were still bobcats/mountain lions in North Raleigh and they hung out in the mine entrances. Just curious if there was any truth to the story.

Is there a mine entrance by the Montessori on Lead Mine? I always remember seeing a little red shed type structure in the woods just off the Montessori property.

I don't recall hearing very much about the mines, but I remember talk of bobcats being seen or heard near the Falls.

YES!!! that is around were the entrance is supposed to be. The barn was an old horse barn but the actual entrance to the mines is supposed to be a little further back closer to the hill. From what I've heard the mines ran all the way to highway 64 way back in the day. I'm only 28 so I am clearly too young to have ever been to them myself but I live right near there and have heard stories about them forever.

When the original Ravenscroft School was the little stone building on Tucker St. between Glenwood and Boylan (I attended first and second grades there in 1959-1961).

The hobby shop downtown (late 1950s/early 1960s) near McDowell (on Martin or Davie St?).

The go-kart track beside the Coca-Cola plant on Wilmington St. near the present 440/40 overpass. I believe its location is the vacant lot on the Northwest side of the 440/40 overpass.

The drive-in on US 70 between Garner and Raleigh (late 1950s/early 1960s).

The airport on US 70 between Raliegh and Garner. You could see the original Benson Gyro-copters fly there and could buy one.

The Planters Peanut store on US 70 between Raleigh and Garner. You could smell the hot peanuts as you drove by, and "Mr. Peanut" (dressed just like the character on the label) would stand by the road and wave to passersby!

The creepy old "haunted house" on (or near) Peace St. near Peace College.

The YMCA on Hillsborough St.

The skatepark on Atlantic Ave. at New Hope Church Rd (1970s).

When Gresham Lake was its full size and drag boat races were held there.

The old Seaboard Railroad turntable off of Seaboard Ave. at Peace St. from the steam locomotive era. It's still there, and still used!

The Howard-Johnson's restaurant (and motel) on US 1 near the original Don Murrays.

Don Murrays barbeque (the little model house is still outside the building) on what used to be called US 1.

The Hayes-Barton pool.

Seeing Kidd Brewer Jr.'s Shelby Cobra around town, with the plaque on the dash: "This car built specifically for Kidd Brewer, Jr."

The Plantation Inn.

The S&H green stamps outlet on North Blvd.
Kidd Brewer's Cobra?

I remember his daughters brand new 1953 Corvette. Just couldn't swallow that straight six in that thing.

I remember playing around at Cameraon Village when it was under construction.

Rememebr the L&M?

The Wake Drive-In...Outdoor Porn at its best.

How bout the Cul-de-Sac out at Oak Park?

The Scramble Dog out in Cary?

Finch's Drive-In? Damn good hot dogs
