Then I went to Wake Tech in 1983 and got my GED. Then I went on to get my BS at NCSU (in two parts - the late 80's and the late 90's). That wasn't my first time to Raleigh though. My mom was from Raleigh and her parents lived over in Drewry Hills off of Six Forks so I had been to Raleigh many times before I moved there. I remember flying into RDU in the early 70's.

The people I remember from Quail Hollow are David Woodcock, Bill Johnson, Patrice Campbell, John Zoltek, Glenn Miller, Gay Brinkley and some other folks but I only remember their first names or their face. I knew some people in Lakemont and just about everywhere in North Raleigh. I could list a mess of folks.

I hung out with the stoner/partyer crowd mainly. I remember when I first went to Sanderson. I had moved down from freezing arse Birmingham, Michigan. I had a blue jean jacket with "The Doors" across the back. And I looked the part and still do to some extent. I wore concert T-shirts everyday. But Sanderson was different then my school in B'ham. Put it this way I stuck out like a sore thumb compared to my fellow classmates at Sanderson. I remember the looks I got. Classic!

Do you think you know who I am?

What about you? Did you go to Ravenscroft? Or what was that Catholic school down off of Anderson Drive?

I vaguely remember the old lady story at Old Wake Forest Rd. and Millbrook Rd. I also know there are some places downtown that are famous for being haunted.

1. One of the stories that I remember had something to do with a fire at the Raleigh Children's Orphanage downtown somewhere and that the place was haunted. Supposedly, you could go down there and see ghosts or something by parking near where it was. I think part of it was still standing or something. Anyone know the story?

2. Another one was that on Halloween Night you could go down to Oakwood Cemetery and one of the big statues head would spin around. I think it was the big angel statue with wings.

3. Going towards the end of Reedy Creek Rd. (before it was a park down there) there was the foundation of a house on the right side at the dead end that was supposedly haunted at one time. The house that was on the leftside was my buddies grandparents old house.

4. At the intersection of Falls Of The Neuse and Strickland Rd. there was an old house with a pond that was supposed to be haunted. It was right across the street from East Millbrook Jr. High. It is all houses now and I think the pond is filled in.

5. There was a house on Wake Forest Rd. between Eastgate Shopping Center and Raleigh Community Hospital. That was called the Fortune Mansion. It was used as a haunted house from what I have been told and there were fake coffins in the basement when I went and checked it out. Anyone know anything about that place?

6. I had read somewhere that there was a haunted house up at Lake Gaston but can't remember anymore then that.

Anyone have any info on these? What about other ones?

I lived in Village Grove off Creedmor Rd across from the old Roses. Well, while Stonehenge was expanding, there was a huge pond off Sawmill/Wilderness with a house that my friends and I swear was haunted. We staked it out, and I think a couple of them went inside. This was circa 1983-84.

Default skiski

Hey skiski,

I got your message and I will call you back soon. Yea, you remember a lot more then me. By the time I moved to Raleigh development was already booming. Basically our old stomping grounds has been completely destroyed by development. It started well before the new 540 loop but now that they put that through north Raleigh is completely toast. Hell, before you know it Falls Lake will be just another lake inside north Raleigh. All that habitat, history and rural appeal swallowed up by the greed for money. How is the housing market in Raleigh?

Anyway, the old days are long gone. But we can still talk about them here. Yes, R.I.P Noonan. Back to Pomerans band Snowblind. In your message you mentioned Ed Root, John Kent, Adam Merrick, David Morrison. The gig I remember was at the Knolls Apartments and I think it was Pomerans, John Kent and Adam Merrick. But could be wrong. I was partaking in much mind altering substances. I remember all the stoners were up in this attic area, up a spiral staircase, and we almost got in a fight with the jocks because they were being arse holes. That's what was different bewteen Raleigh and Birmingham, Michigan. Both the jocks and the hippies partyed together in B'ham. In Raleigh, the jocks just drank and didn't partake in the herb like substances. So it seemed there was conflict. I think you might have been working that night at the Lock, Stock & Barrell at South Hills Mall in Cary.

Default Pond house

Hey jasonmkish,

I just Google Earthed that lake and it is still there. I doubt the house is but it would be interesting to find out. How big was it? It sounds familiar for some reason. I remember this one house by a pond in north Raleigh that a group of guys practiced in. It was like a small mill house by a pond. One of the dudes in the bands' parents owned the land and restored the house so they could practice there. I think they were Millbrook boys but could be wrong. This would have been mid to late 80's I think.

Default Cry Baby Lane

All,

I was researching the orphanage fire ghost story and found this:

The Ophymirage Blog: May 2005 Archives (http://www.ophymirage.net/blog/archives/2005_05.html - broken link)

Apparently there were three fires there and only one of them had a death. So there was no burning building full of children. That is great but it ruins the ghost story. So it is an urban myth.

I remember the orphanage ghost story; in fact, I rode back where I thought it was a few months ago but couldn't find it! Looks like I turned at the wrong place. Funny, no one else I mentioned it to remembered it.

Default Cry Baby Lane

Hey,

If you read the blog at the link I posted it will tell you exactly where it was. Also if you do a Google search for "Cry Baby Lane" it will bring up some ghost hunter groups who have some cool old pictures on their website layered over what is currently there now which is Centennial Campus NCSU. I don't remember how many people I knew back in the day who knew about it. It is interesting how these things live on. The sad part is that many of the places are now gone or the area has changed so much that it isn't the same. Progress, right?

The one I heard didn't involve a light, but she was said to sit in the back seat of your car as you rode through that intersection--people would see her in the rearview mirror.
