Can anyone plse explain year round schooling/tracks to me? Basicly I want to figure out when my son will eventually go to K. He just makes this years cut off, weve decided not to send him, so he'll only be going in 2009. When does the school year start, Aug? Currently our assigned school is Baucom Elementary.

TIA

You should be able to see "DEFINITE" dates on the WCPSS website.

But, my understanding is, Y/R schools start in July (I think tracks 1 2 and 3, with track 4 mirroring a traditional calendar more) and Traditional school starts in late Aug.

If you go to the wake county public school website (Wake County Public School System) then you can look up the "track out calendar", which, to me, is more helpful than the other form of the calendar.

Each school is a little different based on their capacity, but the "basics" are that there are 4 tracks, and 3 tracks are in session at one time. Track 4 tends to resemble traditional more than the other tracks, and will share some "vacation days" together. There are also certain days that the entire school is closed, and no tracks are in session. For all of the tracks, they are in session for 9 weeks, then "tracked out" for 3 weeks. Tracks 1, 2, and 3 begin around July 9th and track 4 begins at the end of July. Track 4 and track 1 tend to be the tracks that have "summer" breaks. Track 1 is out the last three weeks of June, and then the entire school is out the first week of july. Track 4 is tracked out the last three weeks of July, and the entire school is out the first week of july, so they have the entire month of july off, basically.

In july, when the school is closed, this is when students "change" grades. So, if you are on tracks 1 and 4, you will have a month between grades, and tracks 2, and 3 are only out a week between grades.

Hopefully I didn't confuse you more! Honestly, look at the track out calendar and see which times work best with your family. People seem to love which ever track they are on!
