Hey all,

Wife bought me a gas grill for Father's Day, and I plan to put it together this weekend. Quick question: where's the best place around that I can go to buy a pre-filled propane tank? Most places sell them for between $50-60, but can I go anywhere cheaper?

I live in Cary near Morrisville, so anywhere convenient would be great.

There are Blue Rhino stations located at just about every grocery store in the Triangle. The price is generally consistent wherever you go, but if you really want to save a few dollars try one of the warehouse clubs (e.g. Costco, Sams).

I would just get the tank from whatever Blue Rhino place you find and the if a place that fills them is convenient when it runs out, start getting them filled there. Blue Rhino only fills the tanks 75% full (15 pounds v 20 pound capacity) so not only is getting them refilled cheaper each time on the face of it, you are getting more for less money.

If price is the main concern, you can buy an empty tank from Lowe's for about $30...then find somewhere convenient to get it filled (near me, U-Haul or Ace Hardware locations offer this service...U-Haul charges by the gallon, while my Ace charges a flat fee for the fill..so you want to make sure your tank is all the way empty). It only takes a few minutes to get a tank filled, and as mentioned above, you get more propane for less money than you can get at Blue Rhino. I have 2 tanks, so I always have a full spare on hand...this also lets me run my tanks all the way empty (easier to carry that way).

Keep you eye on the free section on Craigslist. I have acquired several propane tanks from people giving them away for free because they didn't know what to do with them. I simply did a propane exchange at a Blue Rhino station so I basically got a new tank with propane for $20.

The nearest Ace stores to me are in south Durham. How much do they charge for propane?

We bought our tanks at Costco for about $25. We refill them there too for about $10-12 per tank.

Walmart is quite a bit cheaper than most places. Something like $39 for a pre-filled tank.
