I'm from Michigan and pretty annoyed with how governed everything is down here. Why can't I hike in somewhere on public land and camp? Why am I getting kicked off the shores of rivers and lakes at frickin 8pm!? I hate campgrounds. They're pathetic. Grow a pair. I'd much rather find any 'ol spot along the shore asnd set up camp. Doesn't even have to be that flat. No neighbors or rules. Any places you can get away with camping on the water? I'm quiet and responsible and just want to be left to my outdoors without anyone in my business. Up North there are SO many places you can pitch a tent with a killer view right on the water for free. No annoying power tripping officers smelling people's breath or enforcing quiet time and thus ruining the best part about the outdoors (seclusion and freedom). They said "it's beautiful down there you'll get to do so many outdoorsy things!" First in freedom but not when it comes to public land....:,(

Maybe the locals know a few tricks or places to enjoy the outdoors without being in a stupid campsite.

Mandy

Abuehler, what part of MI are you from? I lived in various places in southern MI, and haven't experienced too many places like you describe. I'm wondering if you're from Northern MI, or even the UP? I could see it being like that there. The triangle is primarily suburban though. You'd need to compare it to Metro Detroit (or Ann Arbor, or Lansing). I'm sure there are places like you describe in the western side of NC. I have a coworker that does a lot of hiking and camping. I'll try and remember to ask him where he goes and report back to you on Tuesday, if you don't get a lot of good replies between now and then.

Mandy, I suspect you have been trespassing onto private land to camp all along, you just never got caught before. Sorry.

I can't actually unless you're willing to trespass. This isn't exactly the wilderness.

You need a time machine to take you back to 1950's or earlier. Those for free places are now all owned by somebody.

There are lots of options if you leave no trace and dont build a campfire. However from the tone of your post that doesn't sound quite what you are looking for either
