Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a REALLY good primary doctor and GI doctor. Looking for the following:

-Preferably female
-Would like primary doctor to be in North Raleigh or Wake Forest but it's not a must if they are awesome
-Don't care where the GI doctor is as long as they are amazing
-Thorough
-Good bedside manner
-Listens to patients
-Asks questions and actually seems to care
-Doesn't rush through appointments
-Looking for someone that won't just treat symptoms but will really look at my whole body and how everything is related (seems not to happen anymore)
-Basically just looking for the best

Any recommendations?

Best of luck on your search. I finally settled on a primary care doctor after a long search. How good remains yet to be seen. Most of the doctors I checked out were about 2 months out for appointments. Many had changed practices and some wouldn't take me because of my age 64 and of course some wouldn't take my specic insurance plan. The level of frustration was pretty high!

I second carcrazy67. Good luck with wait times.

I went to UNC in Wake Forest and had labs a month ago. No call from anyone regarding results until I called. Was told I'd get a call back once doctor finalized results with recommendations. Still no call. Nothing weird, just routine labs.

Seems like primary care is too overworked and it has been my experience they will manage none of your chronic medical problems they will farm it out to a specialist.

May be a bit of a drive, but I'd actually recommend going outside of Wake county to a family practice doctor in a small town. That is exactly what I will do next year once I am eligible for a physical again so I can get established. I am very disappointed with my choice of UNC. It seems like many practices have been bought by hospitals to cut costs and well frankly it shows.

Sounds like what you are really looking for OP is a concierge service which you pay for out of pocket but the care and time spent with you is top notch. Sadly, you shouldn't have to pay for that kind of service but that is really the pick of the litter. Like most things these days, customer service is virtually non-existent.

Good luck to you!

Thanks guys. Trust me, I am beyond frustrated. It's insane to me that as much as we all spend on healthcare, doctors act like we're imposing on them if we have questions. Maybe someone somewhere will have an idea. It's sad to me that no one has a doctor that fits these requests!!

Wow, I guess I'm really lucky that my PCP and specialist (urology) both use a MyChart app. My pcp uses Duke MyChart and my urologist uses Wake MyChart. I get lab results online within a day or so. I can view my past and future visits with summaries. I can also make appointments and renew Rx's. These apps are fantastic for those who want records of their own personal health.

I had great experiences at UNC with my GI doc, Kim Isaacs. However, it is very difficult to get into the clinic there - you have to have an outside referral. Which means you need to find a primary care or community GI who will refer you. I am not sure what the criteria for referrals are. I had IBD and precancerous cells which led me to surgery (done very successfully at UNC by Dr. Koruda). I have consulted with other UNC docs (on main campus) and always felt like they listened more and were more holisitic in their thinking than doctors I encountered away from the university setting. The waits were often long, but worth it.

Good luck on primary care - I have been looking for a long time, and haven't found anyone I can recommend.

They are! I had my first visit in January with my PCP at Duke Primary Care on Pickett Road in Durham and I had my test results within a couple of days. I was amazed at how efficient everything was compared to what I was used to. Easy breezy. I did have to wait a couple of months for my first visit, though. I called last November and they couldn't squeeze me in until January. It took me forever to find a PCP that was accepting new patients before I finally found one that would see me (Dr. Jeffrey Clough). The doctors in Danville nearly ****ed me up and most people I know up here go to Duke, so I went with their suggestion and I'm glad I did. It's worth the 70 mile drive from my house.
