The flea market on Capital Blvd. has been around for what seems like forever. Years and years ago it was owned by IBM, was later a business college (Hardbarger?) and eventually morphed to an indoor flea market... later expanding to both indoor and outdoor vendors.
In recent years, the flea market (along with multiple food vendors) has become more of a destination for the hispanic community, to the point where it is pretty much only frequented by the ever expanding Latino community in Raleigh.
My take is this : it is mainly a social/cultural spot for the Hispanic community, and unless you have a strong grip on the spanish language, I would probably suggest you take your flea market business to the State Fairgrounds.
Yes, the Flea Market Mall on Capital Blvd. has many Latino vendors and customers, but you don't have to speak Spanish to go there; most of the Latino vendors speak enough English to help you with your purchase. There are also long-time Carolinians there.
Most of the merchandise in the Mall and outside is very inexpensive. There are not many antiques. Mostly household items, some collectibles.
There is a GREAT taco stand at the bottom of the parking lot, just to the left of the entrance on Capital Blvd. Delicious real Mexican-style tacos. I especially love the Carne al Pastor and the Barbacoa.
There is also a great fruit and vegetable market on the north side of the main building. You can get fruits and vegetables at a fraction of what you would pay in a grocery store.
It is certainly an interesting cultural experience. Everybody is very nice and polite.
I agree the state fairgrounds is better, but the Capital Blvd flea market does have great deals on fruits and veggies.
