I like these sorts of places, too, so I'll be checking-in to see what people recommend. I have found a few places where I like to look.
There is a place called
Thieves Market, off exit 13 at I440 (the beltline), towards Knightdale. Lots of square feet of all sorts of stuff. I also like to walk through the re-sale shop called
Consigning Design on W Chatham Street in Cary, especially when I am looking for a piece of furniture. If you don't see what you are looking for, you can tell the owners what you're interested in, and leave a phone number.
I also found a little antique shop in downtown Raleigh, in
Five Points. It is next door to Acquisitions (which carries beautiful, and very expensive, English antiques) but this particular little shop has very reasonable things -- some old, but not necessarily 'antiques.'
My husband also took me to a big antiques flea market in Burlington, just up I40 from us. I think it's called 'Granddaddy's' or something like that. You will see billboards for it, and it is very close to the exit, so you don't have to drive into Burlington. I've been twice -- once, I found lots of things I liked, and could use, and the next time, was awfully disappointed.
Don't overlook the flea market at the
State Fairgrounds. Lots of vendors. The ones who are there, indoors, have some nice pieces of furniture at reasonable prices.
And if you don't mind new, you can walk through
The Green Front on Yonkers Road towards downtown Raleigh. It IS cash-and-carry, although they will deliver. I would go with my dimensions because if you buy it, it is yours. I have found a few beautiful pieces for my house that were roughly 1/3 of the price in a furniture store -- Maitland Smith, and other high-end lines. I just got a bookcase at "a song" compared to what I bought a few years back, in a box, that I had to stain.
Hope this helps, some. Have fun. Come get me, and I'll gladly go with you. I love those kinds of places.
