Went for a run today and was stalked by bloodsucking bugs on the American tobacco trail. They were relentless and looked a little like bees, but I don't think they were. Anyone know what they are? Mean little suckers...

Maybe yellow flies/deer flies? Yellow flies are back! | Welcome to Walton Outdoors Sweat bees never bothered me. They're attracted to sweat, but don't sting unless you bother them. What did they look like?

Could they have been horse flies? They're vicious, too.

Poppydog, that article says yellow flies are attracted mainly to your head, neck or shoulders (like a gnat?) but these were coming at my legs. I'm pretty sure they were sweat bees now...definitely not horseflies, I've encountered those guys before. I guess I need to start running with an epipen, ugh!

Nah, yellow flies are vicious and much bigger than a gnat. They're about the size of a regular housefly maybe up to a small honeybee. I think they'll bite you anywhere. They want to bite you and they hurt. The ones I used to see are yellow, but have triangular shaped wings like a delta wing. yellow fly - Diachlorus ferrugatus

Sweat bees are like other bees and don't sting unless threatened. (What are Sweat bees?) Yellow flies are like mosquitos and bite you on purpose to get a meal.

Could have been something else entirely, though.

Ah ha! That picture of the yellow fly does look a lot like what I saw today. Now to find a way to repel them without using deet or OFF...
