A Raleigh developer wants to build a 224-unit apartment complex and parking deck on the 2-acre block bordered by Hargett, Martin, Bloodworth and East streets.

Another sign of an improving residential real estate market.

Yeah, that lot is so conspicuously open and conveniently situated that it's been much discussed on this forum and elsewhere over the years. It's actually quite a pretty and dramatic location, and so I've daydreamed from time to time about it becoming some sort of park or other really cool open public space, but I suppose that's impractical, especially since it's been such a struggle just to get to renovate and improve Moore Square a couple blocks away from there. I also had sort of wished for more of a mixed-use development on that block, with some offices and stores and maybe even that long-sought downtown grocery store. I still think it would have been a good location for that kind of thing, but I guess we'll take what we can get, and the new plans sound pretty good. And, more broadly, it does seem to be a generally good sign for the overall vitality of the Downtown Raleigh area. And even if the new apartment complex obscures them somewhat, we should at least be able to still enjoy the nice idyllic views of the downtown buildings from the City Cemetery cater-corner from there. I doubt they'll be building apartments on that site any time soon.

I had a cousin come last summer that wants to move in the DT area, I just wish they clean up the Moore Square area it is only clean when a event is going to use it .During the week I hate walking across it for lunch, or even parking around it, Nasty loud etc But it will bring new life to the area .Nice .

Yeap it's exciting to see downtown boom. There are a lot of projects breaking ground this year. You might see about 5 more cranes over downtown next year.

Projects:
Skyhouse - 23 story apartment building (going up in front of woody's in city market)
Edison Office - 13 story office building (going up between Skyhouse and PNC building)
Charter Square South tower - 11 story office building (going up off of Fayetteville st)
Link Apartments - 202 units 6 story (going up across from 42nd st oyster bar)
L Building - about 100 apt units 11 story (going up around the parking deck next to the amphitheater)
Residence Inn - 11 Story Hotel (going up next to the parking deck near the performing arts)

Take a look at the slide show for other projects going on.
