I did a search but nothing stood out -

I am dying for Chicago italian beef sandwiches and found some recipes, and I know you need a certain kind of bread (chewy, can stand up to drenching with gravy) - is there a place that sells that around here? Bread that would stand up to a good sausage and peppers sandwich as well :-)

I will drive quite far to get this bread! Thanks!

You might try La Farm Bakery at High House Corners in Cary.
Good bread, crusty, etc. Don't know if they will have exactly what you seek, though.

Guglhuph makes a couple of different Italian breads.
Guglhupf Bakery & Pâtisserie - Catalog - Breads (http://www.guglhupf.com/catalog/breads/breads.html - broken link)
They don't make them everyday, though, so you'll need to check their schedule.
Guglhupf Bakery & Pâtisserie - Store - Baking Schedule (http://www.guglhupf.com/store/schedule.html - broken link)
Looks like they have 2 varieties of Ciabatta available on Wednesdays and Fridays. If you can't get there in the morning, give them a call. Maybe they can hold one for you.

It's got a hard crust and soft inside. The hard crust keeps the outside from getting soggy.

Aha - yes it might be Ciabatta. THANKS!

Here is a gallery of Chicago italian beef: (I've only had it in Florida - will make it here)

(hungry)

Chicago-style food

Mrs. Steel, that bakery looks AMAZING. And it's close by - I'll get the ciabatta and more...

I have lived here 13 years and I have yet to find any good italian bread. I actually made it worse for myself by going to Federal Hill in RI this past summer. We had fresh baked italian bread the morning we left. sigh

when in a pinch, Lowes Food carries Anthony & Sons Italian Bread Line in their bakery...it's not bad... Think its a NJ based bread company, I would imagine it's shipped frozen and then baked...

I have tried the Anthony and Sons at Lowes, and it is quite good, esp if you put it in the oven at 350 for 15 min before serving. Other than that, there's a baker at the Farmers market on Saturdays who has GREAT bread. Just get there early, cause there's always a line, and they sell out early. Oh, and her scones are excellent too.....
