If you are gonna go to Ayden, pass on Skylight and go to Bums that is downtown. Much better, and a lot less of that yellow gristle you get at Skylight.
I'd suggest driving down I-85, going past Lexington, and stopping at Gary's in China Grove. The fountain cheerwine is an added bonus.
If you want to ease over to Wilson, dang senior moment, there is a real good place there, Parkers, I think it is.
I eat a lot of "q" and I don't spend much time worrying about is x better than y. My decision is "is x good."

Why no love for Clyde Coopers? I enjoyed it! Very old school decor, but as an added bonus they have excellent fried chicken if you don't like the barbecue!
Best Eastern Style I tasted in the Raleigh area. North Carolina style Bar-B-Cue is becoming popular as far north as Michigan, but it just doesn't taste the same. Even award winning northern BBQ joints serving Eastern Style "Q" don't get it right. I've learned how to make my own using a (don't scream now) Crock Pot. I know it is sacrilege but using authentic liquid smoke, not the chemical flavor blends, makes it taste almost as good as the real NC "Q", and better than what I can buy in the northern BBQ joints.
Since we're talking about places to the east of Raleigh now, I'll put out a shout for my favorite, Grady's in Dudley. It's worth a detour on your way to Wilmington.

I love when these threads pop up - gets me off to check out new and old places again.
