I know places like the Magnolia Grill and Lantern make a lot of the 'best restaurant' lists, but which is your favorite nice restaurant in the area? Do the big names live up to their reputations? And which newer or less well know places are worth a checking out?

If you wanted to impress the boss, where would you go? If you were planning to propose to that special someone, where would you pick? How about if it were your last meal on earth?

What gets your vote for best places to eat? And are there any places that disappointed you?

I am not sure what you consider "Best".
But for something a little out of the ordinary with exceptional service and outstanding food cooked by premier chefs check out a place called "Gingers" at the Harris Teeter/Walmart shopping center in Cary off Tryon and Kildaire Farm Road.
Ginger Asian Cuisine - Cary, NC

My other favorite is Bella Monica off Blue Ridge Road in the Harris Teeter Shopping center nr Edwards mill road. Try their Margharitta pizza or their wheat Penne pasta!

Herons, at The Umstead. I've been to some pretty nice places in other cities, but that's the nicest one I've been to in this area.

I hated Herons for multiple reasons, and I know hate is a strong word.

I've never tried Second Empire in Raleigh, but I always heard it was a very nice restaurant. Second Empire Restaurant and Tavern -

My two favorite "nice restaurants" (out of very many nice restaurants in this area) are Nana's in Durham, and Elaines on Franklin in Chapel Hill. Both offer excellent food, but equally important to me, offer a nice, quiet, intimate setting where I can enjoy a very romantic dinner with my wife. For those very same reasons, they're not the place I would take the boss to impress him.

18 Seaboard in Raleigh gets my vote. It's the best combination of excellent food, service, comfort, and decor. Kudos to Owner/Chef Jason Smith. His food is excellent and his staff rocks!

"Nice" is pretty subjective. For me, my favorite "nice" restaurant is Second Empire. Wonderful atmosphere, excellent service, and delicious food. The old Victorian home housing it is just gorgeous.

I agree second empires atmosphere is beautiful. There is an awesome French restaurant in a strip mall in Raleigh, the name escapes me, but the delivery, quality, presentation, and service is the nicest I've been to in the area. Just too bad it's in a strp mall and not in a place like SE.
