Isn't the Triangle a CSA? Wake-Cary and Durham-Orange are two separate MSAs.

The official count date was April 2010, I think since then Wake has surpassed, but I'm not entirely sure.

Are you referring to the Raleigh-Durham-Cary CSA? Does it cover 8 counties? I've never heard of a "Triangle MSA" [as defined by the Office of Management and Budget] - just the Raleigh-Cary MSA, a Durham-Chapel Hill MSA, and a CSA combining them (Raleigh-Durham-Cary CSA).

well only 11% estimated the right answer

The U.S. Census Bureau reported Raleigh's 2010 population at 403,892. This reflects 46.3 percent population growth over the past decade. The 2000 Census put Raleigh's population at 276,093.

The only problem with that theory is that Wake County has more people than North Dakota.

I started that thread and can say now that I was short by a few thousand. I thought the Census would come up just short of 400K. On the Price is Right, that would have been a pretty good showcase bid.

The Raleigh-Durham-Cary CSA consists of 8 counties including the three for Raleigh-Cary and the four for Durham-Chapel Hill. The Dunn micropolitan area is also included in the CSA.
I expect that those will change the next time the Census considers the issue. I am looking for Granville County to be in the mix the next time.

Yes...that was a typo on my part. Good catch.

I still wonder if the totals are correct for the two counties. If one estimates total population by correlation to public school enrollment (which is a far more accurate count of actual people), Wake's system has been larger than Mecklenburg's for a few years now. Of course, this could be a false indicator if one or more of the following are true:
  1. A higher percentage of Mecklenburg students attend private school.
  2. There's a significantly greater share of the population that's above secondary school age in Mecklenburg
  3. There's a much greater drop out rate of teenagers in Mecklenburg than in Wake
  4. There's more pre-school age children in Mecklenburg who aren't counted using the public school enrollment metric (but will be soon)
  5. There's significantly more 19 year olds repeating grades in the public system in Wake than in Mecklenburg.
  6. There's a greater percentage of home schooled children in Mecklenburg

In the end, I think it's an interesting enough topic to consider. I wonder if Raleigh or Wake will challenge the Census numbers?

Probably just a couple years away.

Both of which will hit the million mark before 2020.
