The US Census website has been updated with the latest population figures (2007). Raleigh's population was 375,806 in 2007 according to the website. That's an increase of about 19,000 from the previous year.

Here's the 2007 Census figures for some key cities that Raleigh has been chasing in population. Raleigh's recent city limits growth has been much faster than that of all the cities it's been chasing. But, as of 2007, it hasn't passed all of them yet. I tossed a few more cities on top of the list to set the next benchmarks.
In descending order with the change in populations since 2000 in population:
If trending continued, Raleigh most likely passed 3 more cities in 2008 but that won't be estimated by the Census until next year.
The Wake County estimate for 2007 is 832,970. Wake's population is gaining on Mecklenburg's and trends about 1 year behind it. To put that in perspective, in the begining of the decade, Wake's population was trending about 3 years behind Mecklenburg.
Wow, bigger populations than Honolulu and Wichita, and still, you travel to most places in the US, and people say "Raleigh?? Where's that??"
Actually, Raleigh's city limits have been larger than Pittsburgh (311,218), Tampa (336,823) and Cincinnati (332,458) for a few years now. But, the story isn't all about the city limits. It's also about the metro area and the city's sphere of influence.
There are cities like Miami (409,719) whose populations are miniscule in the context of its overall metro (5,413,212 Miami/Ft.Lauderdale/West Palm Beach). In contrast, there are cities like Jacksonville, FL (805,605) and Austin (743,074) whose city limits dominate metro areas that are actually similar or smaller in population to that of the Triangle.
