We are looking to plant zoysia in our front yard, mainly becasue we like the way it looks and don't mind it turning brown in the winter.

Was wondering if it would be better to use plugs since we already have grass i nthe front yard. Also where should we get the plugs? And when would be the best time to put them in?

thanks

I'm no expert but did do this to my front yard in a previous home. i did the (small) plugs but they are slowest method. Better if you could do small sections of sod like a checker board. I'd web search to see if there is a better way. HGTV web might have something on it? Anyhow, it was the best decision I made for my yard being that the oak trees choked out the sunlight and grabbed all the water from grass. Zoysia can handle this type of environ...need less watering once established, less cutting and chokes out weeds...awesome!

i would think now would be a good time to plan before it warms up. Keep it well watered with a good soaking every other day or so.

Zoysia sod is hardly available until May.
It is a little more sensitive to cold weather, and most will not cut sod until then.

We are not doing sod per se...just plugs. We found an online place that has them year round pretty much.

Understood.
Your plugs are cut from sod. It is just a method to save the cost of full sodding.

Best to do the plugs when not dormant(as they are now), I would wait until mid-May. Then get rolls of sod from a sod farm and cut into small squares, much more economical and will take faster.

Plant warm season grasses in May. I would not plant now (even though it's deceptively warm out!)

A neighbor did this a couple of years ago, and used the squares to get about 10% coverage. It filled in last year and looks great.

Any recommendations for a sod farm in the Cary / Apex area to get a roll of Zoysia? and roughly what is the cost of say a 9ft length of sod? and, will they sell such a small quantity for patching?
