Yesterday I caught this bright spot off to the left of the sun - kind of a rainbow with no rain, these are called sun dogs, false suns, or more scientifically, parhelions. Caused by ice crystals in the atmosphere - thought I'd share.
When I was a kid...5th grade I think, I was outside on the playground and saw a rainbow in a circle around the sun. I was fascinated by it and I've never seen such a thing since. Would that be considered the same thing as your photograph?

Very cool! I hadn't thought of these since I learned about them in an astronomy elective in college.
