I have some friends relocating soon and looking for a small private school for her elementary and middle school children.

Ideally, the school has less than 200 students and a very small student to teacher ratio (less than 10 to 1).

Looking for a school that emphasizes a well-rounded student, who can think critically.

I have heard good things about Atlas International School -- across from South Hills Mall in the Cary area - Atlas International School - Overview of Atlas

I'd love to have a larger list to share with my friends. Please add those you know of.

Again, not looking for the likes of Cary Academy, Grace Christian School, etc. Those are way too large for them.

have heard good things about Thales School in Wake Forest, which i think was set up by the people who created Franklin Academy. I have no idea how big they are. I love the Raleigh School! Their elementary school is awesome, but too far for us as we live near WF.

Resurrection Lutheran is a small Christian school in Cary and it goes up to 8th grade. It's a new construction and it looks nice. My kids went to preschool there.

As an educator, I would recommend that they narrow the list by checking accreditation and membership to educational organizations. My personal favorites are:

NAIS - National Association of Independent Schools
American Montessori Society
North Carolina Association of Independent Schools

I wouldn't touch a school that isn't willing to undergo oversight of some sort. There is also a Christian School organization if they want to go religious.

Thanks for the additional recommendations. I just learned that Atlas International School is having an open house this Friday at 10:30am.

Any good Montessori schools (with small class sizes) in the area? Do any go up through middle school?

We go to Thales Academy in WF anbd love it. You can PM me if you want more details. So many people have recently enrolled in our campus that class size is around 17/18...still better than the public school. i know there is a campus in APEX and also North Raleigh.
