The side closest to Blackwell St. (home plate towards the third base side) is shadier in the evening since there are American Tobacco Campus buildings directly behind it to block some of the sun from the west.
For an afternoon game, I'm not sure it makes much difference which side you choose, but I can't say for sure since I never get to those early games!
I would not recommend sitting behind home plate though. We have had mini plans there the last several years and have probably been to 100 games. We tried out seats back there once for a USa baseball game and it is super still and oppressively hot. They did add a large fan in the roof area so that may have helped, but it is still closed on 3 sides there.
We currently sit in section 210 on the first base side, which is just under the cover and as the sun goes west, the shadow gets longer. For a 7:00 game, up to section 212 is completely shaded this time of year and even latert in teh year, it is not much a problem. Sections 214 and out to teh outfeild don;t get shade till later in the game, so afternoon or 5:00 start games are pretty sunny.
The fan is AWESOME! I don't have anything to compare it to since behind home plate is the only place I've sat, but man... those things are high powered!
