For just about a year, I commuted from SE Portland (57th & Flavel area) to Keizer -- 50 miles/one hour each way. I loved living in Portland, but the commute eventually became too much and I ended up moving to Salem, which I hated.
That doesn't mean you wouldn't like it there, of course -- personal preference.
However, if you choose to live in Portland, you should look into
Valley Van Pool , or
Cherriotts Ride Share (http://www.cherriotsrideshare.org/Carpool_Vanpool_Transit.html - broken link). If the hours/route work for you, it would be much more relaxing than making the drive yourself.
