Western is definitely the larger and better known. When I was going to Portland State, you could have lunch at the school and it was always good.

What you'd need to know is what their placement rate is and where grads are placed - that I can't help you with. The Portland restaurant scene is fiercely competitive (like most cities, I suppose), and the food magazines have been touting Portland's restaurant scene for years now, making it even more so in the higher end niches.

My son-in-law is a graduate of Western (I think he graduated 4 years ago). He is the executive chef at a country club now and very happy to have a job where he can be creative. If I was to ask him about it, I think he would say that only people with a true passion for food will have success in the field. It's very hard work and extremely competitive. Some of his fellow students have contacted him about jobs - it is difficult to find work in this recession and lots of culinary school graduates are frying burgers. If you feel the passion, go for it. Times will get better and a talented chef will always find work.

Western's definitely the big dog.

Clark College has a good program, as does Linn-Benton Community College, if you don't want to go the private school route.
