I'm considering a move into the Pacific Northwest next year for a new medical job after fellowship. I'm curious to hear from any in the medical community on this forum regarding their quality of life and satisfaction with their practice. Any words of wisdom, areas to avoid, best places to network etc?
Thanks for your time,
-PDXzen

Well I'm not a physician but I am a nurse who recently left OHSU. The overall impression I got from the surgeons I worked with were good. They all seemed happy with practicing in Oregon and had good job satisfaction at the University. I think Portland would be your best bet for networking because there is the University plus the Providence system, Legacy, and Kaiser. I don't know if that helps at all.

Yeah, there are a ton. Plus at OHSU they have contracts with Shriner's children's hospital and the VA on Marquim Hill. It depends what specialties you want to go into. Surgical specialties do great out here at OHSU, all the surgeons I've met are enthusastic, happy, and very motivated to give it their all (only met Ortho and Neuro types in my job). Family/internists are usually grumpy and sour from meeting a few, both as a patient and in the workplace. I think I met the ones (6 so far) that were really affected by the weather, and since they were stuck for their residency they were not happy.

My take is that Family/Internists are not a happy lot anywhere. Their pay is not great, their span of responsibilities large and their relationship with patients often close. Surgeons are rarely attached to their patients.

Don't overlook the VA. They have a large hospital on Pill Hill.
