Hi, my fiance and I are getting married in August, after which we plan to move to Portland and set up Oregon residency, get into PSU and finish our degrees there. I am transferring my job, and my fiance is hoping to find a job when we get there. My question is, how hard will that be? I've been reading a lot about tough economic times and how extremely hard it is to find a job...we don't need a big job with a lot of money, just a good second income to support us while we go through school. Any ideas, comments, advice?

The easiest jobs for student-age people would probably be barista/waitstaff. But at the moment, the restaurant business is cutting back quite a bit. My husband is a musician (not his day job), and the staff we talk to at the bars and restaurants where he plays are getting their hours cut. It's the economy, sorry to say. There's always some sort of job available, somewhere, but it's not as easy as it was. The "portland picks" website will give you an idea of the bars, restaurants, retail, etc. here in town. Make sure you have savings, resume, references, clean driving record, etc. that should help. Some of the people are also making and selling crafts at the Saturday market and/or etsy, that's big here. You might have to have more than one job to make it, but that's not so bad. I did it, and survived. Make a practical plan, is my advice, and expect to struggle a bit. Good luck.
