I received a Canada Goose jacket as a gift a couple years back (stuffed with down feathers and coyote fur on hood) and as I know PDX is quite the liberal city, would I get some criticism and stares wearing this around?

It is quite functional for the cold as I've worn it in NY and parts of Canada and don't even have to layer but am afraid of some backlash while visiting.

Before anyone starts a whole animal cruelty post, do know that I am totally against animal cruelty (I raise a ton of pets myself, including 3 dogs). I only received this jacket as a gift when going to freezing Canada and was unaware of coyote fur until reading up about the company...

Yes, fur is looked upon here more so than in NYC. Nobody will throw paint on you but I can see you getting comments for wearing fur especially since it's not that cold here.

If anybody asks tell them it's fake fur.
I think most everyone will assume that it is anyway.

I bet you might get some weird condescending looks, but chances are nobody will confront you.

With all the new transplants here, those old days of Portland fanaticism are fading away.

I doubt many people will know it is real fur. That style coat with fake fur trim is the style right now, so you probably won't get a second look.

Aside from bleeding heart liberal city dwellers, anybody that knows anything about coyotes won't care.

Who cares what some Portland person (of from anytwhere else for that matter) thinks????
If you enjoy the coat - wear it.

Criminy - your talking about coyote fur.
Coyotes are an unprotected species and literally abound in 49 states, Canada and Mexico.
A lot of fun to hunt though!

It's not like your talking about a whale skin coat lined in baby seal fur.

Enjoy your visit and don't sweat what some stranger thinks. From what I can tell, Portland is not that vocal anyway.

For what it's worth...

Most Canadians don't buy or wear the Canada Goose brand clothing. It's the recent Immigrants, and in particular the Chinese International University students who buy them. To them it's a status symbol, along with all the other glitz that their parent's money can buy here in Canada.

For those of us that actually NEED to work outside, in the winter, there are much more durable and cheaper brands for sale here. I will say that the Canada Goose brand clothes are well made, and they are made IN Canada, but I wouldn't buy it to work in.

Most people in Portland wear warm and at least water repellent, if not waterproof, jackets. Most of the "down" jackets here are synthetic down, again from a water proofing perspective. Actual down jackets need to breathe and are often not particularly good in wet weather.

The kind of jacket you'd wear in cold and dry climates doesn't translate well to Portland, where WET is part of the equation.

True.
Nothing is worse than a rain soaked down jacket.
Totally worthless.

With respect to the fur edged hood Columbia Sportswear has a jacket with fake fur edged hood. Granddaughter has one and loves it.

As others have mentioned the down will be an issue unless we get a really cold snap.
