I recommed Hawthorne Portland Hostel – Portland Oregon USA .

It has a nice organic garden besides being a very nice place according to all reports. You will have the benefit of seeing this part of this part of SE along good buslines. The #14 which stops a block away will take you to downtown where you will be able to transfer to other neighborhoods in other sections of town or farther east in the oppostie direction along Hawthorne Blvd.

Five blocks to the south will take you to the #15 Belmont which will also take you downtown or in the opposite direction to the farther eastern neighborhoods. You can also transfer to the #75 from either of these buses on Ceasar Chavez Blvd (aka 39th St) north to the Fremont neighborhood all the way up to the St Johns neighborhood (nice but much farther out) or south passing through Woodstock, another nice nieghborhood, all the way to the suburb of Milwaukie.

This isn't in Portland, but you did mention the Eugene area. Do as search on "Lost Valley", Lane County. This place might be of interest to you, if only for a place to visit while you're here.
