I am 25 moving to Portland. How is the town for younger adults less worried about raising a family but more into meeting people my own age and and activities to do, social life, music scene etc etc? What is the best part of town to live in(things to do vs affordability)? I was told the SE side of Portland. Do you have to be an extremist to fit in in Portland? I am fairly moderate politically and spiritualy, but I'm very tolerant. I'd be moving from Miami Fl for a job and am a bit worried about the culture shock of fast paced sunny Miami Beach to rainy Portland. It's seems past threads are geared more for people wanting to start families and buy houses. I am just looking for info on young adults starting out. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

It would probably be a big change from Miami. Portland is not a fast paced city with beaches and round the clock entertainment. You'll find many people in your age group with many things to do, it all depends on your interests. I hear they have many small movie theaters and a strong independent music scene. There's also arts, parks and museums. I wouldn't compare Portland with Miami though and the weather is quite the opposite. SE Portland Hawthorne District would be a good option as long as money is not an issue for you. I'm not sure what an "extremist" is. I don't think anyone will cut of your head and film it Many people say that it's very socialist/left wing but others also say that there is a republican/conservative presence as well (in the city) Suburbs are mostly republican/conservative, it fits some I guess. As long as you're TOLERANT then you'll be fine anywhere you go. Also, be sure you can cope with many days/months of rain and darkness. It's not a sunshine state like Florida and not as warm. I think you might like it.

This is an interesting thread for me as well. I am 26 (will be 27 if/when I move to Portland soon) and my partner is 28 and we are interested in finding a neighborhood to buy a house that skews younger and is not a suburb. Have heard that Hawthorne is younger, but that it has more of a party (college?) scene? Not that this is bad, but is it somewhere to find good housing as well?

Actually the college scene is more around downtown if anything. Hawthorne is more of your hipster crowd 20-30 somethings as well as all ages. It's been gentrified though and expensive. Tattoo'd kids and yuppies with a good amount of money. I don't think this area represents "starving artists."
You'll find young people almost anywhere in the city. It all depends on what you're looking for and the type of people you want to be around.

Are you looking for a family neighborhood or a party/action scene?

Rx Marcus,
Look around the bottom of Mt.Tabor and Laurelhurst..some affordable, only 15 minutes from downtown. Very close to great areas..(hawthorne, woodstock) Check around Reed College. Also take a look just south of downtown (Multnohmah Village, Hillsdale) some hidden gems there. Both a house type area, and only minutes from downtown and services.IMO

I know, that is why we are visiting in November. Since everyone pegs the weather as the #1 issue with Portland, I figured we should come and see what it is all about. If we still like the city as its worst, then we will very seriously think of moving.
