I was calling a State Agency about an application I had submitted 2 months ago... Someone picked up (which is unusual because the 20+ times I called throughout the process always immediately went to voice mail).. Anyhow, I asked them that since they have all of my materials, how long does it take to give the final stamp of approval... They replied they don't know... I asked them why.. and they replied that it depends on how many people show up to work... I was thinking, "Huh?"... How many people show up to work? Isn't this a government job? Don't you have to show up to work every day? I asked them the average and they said usually 1 week, perhaps 2 weeks but can be as long as three weeks... by the way, my application is now in the third week... apparently not many people showed up to work the last three weeks... that might explain why it keeps going into voice mail on the first ring for the past two months... I hate unionized government workers...

Hmmm, maybe I need a government job.

I don't even get to call in sick.

Ever hear of vacations?

I work in region of a national company. We have about 25 total employees, about the same of a local government agency.

I can count on one hand, the number of weeks where there wasn't someone off of work. I don't have enough fingers to count the number of times that there were 30% or more of the workforce out on vacation.

Or forced furloughs? A lot of government agencies have instituted furlough programs and gone to 3 and 4 day work weeks.

And to the point about vacations: in many cases, employees have to 'use it or lose' it, usually by the end of the 1st quarter of each year. Perfectly understandable that there would be a lot of people out a few weeks back. I know that there were a lot at my company that last week of March
