Yes I agree, but previous generations, the further you back the better they had it than we do today.

Imagine how much freedom we will have in the year 2050. I bet the internet will cost per minute to use. Makes me want to self induce into vomiting.

I have learned to do without so many things. Food, clothing, shelter, and nature provide me with the basics. I am not a goody goody, but I do save up for hedonistic binges. No smoking, no TV except for DVD's, I shop the underground market (thrift shops dent cans). Health is my main concern. I binge in Las Vegas mainly, eating gourmet meals, and shooting a little dice. Stress reduction matters most. Avoid toxic people, and toxic environments. "Bad" is anything that drains our vital energies, be it physical, emotional, or spiritual.

So ya just give up?
I don't get it.....What would your solution be? How would you change things?
3 grades of schooling and then work a 4 hour work day for 250k/year???
More reward for less effort???
I wonder who you voted for.......

Life is pretty freaking awesome

Yeah, there are issues...but when push comes to shove I'm pretty happy and optimistic about what life has in store for me.

Life is not bad, unless you choose to make it bad, life is what you make of it, you can improve your situation, if you want to pick yourself up. Hey our Ancestors lived, without the conviences and comforts that we know of today, they should of had it bad not us. And they made it. We as Americans need to come to grip with the reality, that living in this Country, we do not have it bad, inspite of what some may think, and some think we have it bad. When we were born, and got that slap on the behind, nothing from the point, was a certain, that life, was going to be just grand, and without troubles, this is what gives some character and some not. We grow and we learn, and pick ourselves up, during desperate and troubling times.

You see my point?
  2. We either go to college or not and get a job and we still end up working 40 hours a week and some of us that have kids and families etc hardly have anytime to be together. Why does it matter what you degree you get or what career you follow if you don't have time to enjoy life? Who cares if you like your job or not, the point is that you dont have a choice - you need the money. Why cant we work less hours in america, what is so bad about a 30 hour work week like they have in Europe?
  3. The little time we have to be at home, we either go out to eat and pay outrageous prices, or watch a movie or two at a theater and waste $50 to $100+ and to top it off we have to watch stupid commercials.
  4. Everywhere you go you are reminded that you can't be fat, you have to be physically fit, eat healthy and join a gym and of course watch out for terrorists.
  5. At home you watch TV and get "entertained" by channels like CNN, Fox and MSNBC. You pay for 500 channels on either cable or satellite and most of them are crap, like home shopping or garbage. Then you have mindless reality TV shows that they spoon feed to us because apparently we americans are easy to entertain. Only good channels nowadays are like Discovery channel. But in reality we watch tons of commercials and have no choice in the matter - why cant we opt out like we can with "do not call" lists? Why cant we opt out for junk mail that we have to pay to throw away?
  6. Why are these damn gas prices going up and down all the time? Why cant they charge 18-wheelers the most money for gas instead and just pass that cost down to the goods being sold?
  7. Why is music like rap music ruined by going "bubble gum"? Why cant anything pure be kept that way instead of being commercialized to make the most money?
  8. Credit cards are evil and you should never get one. Also if you can never finance a car, instead save up and buy it cash if you can. Thanks to Reagan we now need credit to survive but we don't have to own everything we see in those commercials we are paying to see. Anything that comes with fine print is bad. Bastards.
  9. There is nothing wrong with gambling, playing lotto, smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol or even certain drugs like marijuana. As long as things are done with moderation - we as a society don't need to be told not to do these things or be taught they are bad. These are social things and they should not be frowned on or limited.
  10. Yes we still have a few freedoms left in america. But most though are going away slowly, like smoking in public, going on a plane without getting nude first, text messaging at a red light or using a phone in a car while driving (like the cops do). Running a stop sign that really didn't belong there in the first place - just because some idiot put it there. Then you have red light cameras everywhere. In other words we dont have the benefit of the doubt anymore, no more discretion. It's: You are guilty by default. OK maybe the stop sign thing was stupid to mention, but you get the idea.
You are reading this and you either AGREE or probably think I am crazy. It's OK if you think I am crazy because maybe you are OK with the way things are in life. More power to you, but I am sure one day you will feel trapped or lost.

Think about all this, when you are a senior citizen, none of what you did in school or did for a living will matter except that you have people around you that love you. Of course and that you have some money put away to spend $100 at the movies with your grand kids. That's all you need in the end, love, just like John Lennon said.

I could pretty much disagree with each and every one of your points, but gosh. . . I worked all day and am tired, and I've gotta go out and have dinner at an expensive restaurant with family and friends. . . .

First of all. . . education, learning, is one of the greatest opportunities that any of us have for creating joy in our lives. The more we know, the more we realize how much more there is to learn. With each new learning, our world becomes larger and more complex and much more interesting.

I will also dissagree that education is nothing more that job preparation. I am probably showing my age here, but my education, through college and on to become a non-degreed professional in several other fields, was as much a preparation for life as for work. In fact, a basic education (and I do consider basic to include a 4 year liberal arts degree) is necessary to teach people how to learn. Once they know that, the world is their oyster!

Well. . . I'm a senior citizen now, looking forward to retirement, so that I can learn to play several musical instruments much better than I now do, so that I can spend much more time reading, so that I can paint (pictures). That college degree was in fine arts. . . so don't tell me I won't use it. . . .

Nope...

You lost this bet. I don't agree. Sorry your life sucks, though.

1. Education is its own reward, and anyone who feels it was a waste is really trying to say they wasted an opportunity.

2. If you do not want to work 40 hours in a week then don't. Find a job that allows you to work less and make the same. I have friends who work 3 or 4 hours a day and are able to take care of their family just fine.

3. Then do what I do, buy a cheap pizza, cheap bottle of soda ($6) and pay for cable movie channels ($14) and then you only spend $20 per movie while saving on gas money. And hey, if you are a tree hugger you can tell everyone you helped the environment!

4. Eating healthy is a good thing, and why join a gym, you can run on the sidewalk and do jumping jacks in your bedroom. Gyms are a waste of money if all you are doing is trying to stay healthy.

5. Two points here, first television is a business designed to make money hence commercials, and second don't like what is on TV then turn it off and read a book or play a board game with your family.

6. Brilliant idea! Let's make everything in our economy more expensive purely to save a few pennies per gallon when filling up at the pump.

7. Wait? You think Rap is music? Really?

8. You do not need credit cards to survive. Yes they do make things easier. I have had a credit card for over 20 years now and never had a balance from month to month. I use it as a convenient check book.

9. Gambling = waste of money (I live in Vegas, trust me on this), Lotto = Broken promise (money is suppose to be used for education, schools very seldom if ever see the money), cigarettes and alcohol are a waste of money and bad for you, and pot is just wrong on so many levels (seriously, these people can barely drive while sober, do you really want them out there after taking a few hits?)

10. We have plenty of freedoms, but the ones you want all have more to do with what you want instead of what is best for society. Smoking in a right, but you do not have the right to force me to smoke as well. Follow the guidelines of airport security and the checkpoint becomes nothing more than a wait in a line, text messaging in a car is just stupid and dangerous if what you need to say is so important then pull over first. Are you a traffic engineer? Then how do you know that the stop sign doesn't need to be there, and if you ran it then you were not paying attention anyway (texting maybe?). Red light cameras only catch those running red lights (if working properly). Simple solution, if you see yellow, stop.

I'm a middle aged man who has busted his hump all his adult life trying to make sure my kids have better than I did. So far I am doing okay, my boy is going to college on my dime and doesn't have to worry about anything past school work. My finances are a bit tight right now, so I am going back to school to get another career so that I can make sure that my wife and I live a good life. This is the American dream, to work hard so that your children can have a good chance in life. Somewhere the dream got perverted into "I want to have fun, and I want in now. But I want someone else to pay for it."
