Accountability with elected officials, that's what we need.
I propose a new law. For each month that the unemployment rate stays above 5 percent, our elected officials will loose 10 percent of their pay and benefits.
If they can't get the problem fixed, and don't want to work for free (like I suppose they expect us to do), then they'll find themselves at the end of the unemployment line.
JOB POSTING
Needed: an able minded liar, capable of shifting numbers to make any argument, not loyal to any cause except self promotion, poise and tact with delivery, teleprompter skills a plus. Apply inside. After deduction for health insurance pay is -$1.25 per hour. Salary NOT negotiable. Only non-union members need apply.

Socialists expect the government to run the private sector. Just thought I would remind everyone before they out themselves here. Oppps, too late.

Wow..where to start. I guess I'll reply in simple terms.
The government is not the employer of every working American not matter how hard you may wish for it.
The government cannot create jobs (except IN the government); they can only create a favorable environment for capitalists who do create jobs.

I'd expect such an observation. So explain how the private sector will overcome such immense trade disparity that originates from a communist country that oppresses it's people to poverty wages??
Sometimes high unemployment is necessary to fix economic imbalances. One example is the situation in Germany. The Germans need to stop subsidizing production to restore balance between different members states in the Eurozone but they cannot because it will lead to a short term rise in unemployment. In the long run though, the German and the entire Eurozone economy will be more balanced and stronger. If you start punishing politicians for making necessary decisions, then the right decisions will never be made.

An incredibly stupid idea - no, make that STOOPID idea - unless your goal is to have the unemployment rate "miraculously' ALWAYS remain below 5% no matter what the reality is. In fact, the WHOLE IDEA of putting elected officials on low pay is DUMB DUMB DUMB - and makes as much sense as paying your financial advisor minimum wage.
Let me make this VERY CLEAR - you NEVER want ANYONE who oversees your finances to be hurting for money and feeling underpaid - that's a sure fire way to find yourself ripped off big time. One of the big reasons that all the areas of the world that used to be colonies under Spain have so much corruption is that the Spannish crown believed that civil servants etc in the colonies need not be paid much (if at all) since the assumption was that those people could "earn" their salary through graft (ie putting the squeeze on the locals). The Spannish kings (and queens) liked this idea since it put the burden of government "overhead" on the local people rather than the Spannish government (so from the government perspective civil servants were working for nearly "free"). It's the same kind of thinking that says "waiters and waitresses need not be paid more than minimum wage because they'll make up the difference in tips".
This turned out to be a VERY BAD idea since it INSTITUTIONALIZED CORRUPTION and made it VERY HARD to later stamp out. Same thing would happen with YOUR silly idea.
