Democratic-controlled Senate approves $1.9T increase in federal borrowing limit - latimes.com (http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/politics/wire/sns-ap-us-senate-debt-limit,0,5574424.story - broken link)

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Democratic-controlled Senate has muscled through a plan to allow the government to go a whopping $1.9 trillion deeper in debt.

The party-line 60-40 vote was successful only because Republican Sen.-elect Scott Brown has yet to be seated. Sixty votes were required to approve the increase. The measure would lift the debt ceiling to $14.3 trillion. That's about $45,000 for every American.

This is outrageous. Kirk's tenure ended with the election of Brown, he should not be allowed to cast anymore votes - so this is why he has not been seated yet.

Well to be fair, it would of died and the government (specifically, the democrats) would be blamed for not handling the situation... They are trying to be "fair" about it cause the Republicans would of blocked it for purely political reasons.. the debt ceiling NEEDED to go up because the liberals would have a REALLY hard time getting anything done and they did it for political reasons as well... so, it comes down to politics of republicans and democrats... unfortunately the democrats are playing dirty but then the republicans are very much clean either... personally, I think it needed to be done because the democrats REALLY ruined it for America... they caused this huge deficit.. and now they are just trying to cover it up... politics

Meanwhile, Republicans balked at reinstating the pay-go rule.

Senate passes pay-go rule on party-line vote
By Michael O'Brien - 01/28/10 11:58 AM ET
The Senate voted along party lines on Thursday to adopt statutory pay-go rules in a party-lines vote.

60 Democratic senators voted to adopt the pay-go measure (short for "pay-as-you-go"), which would require that new spending measures be offset in the budget by other funds, typically raised through tax increases or cuts to spending.

Republicans have said that by installing the rule, pay-go would become an excuse for tax hikes, since spending cuts are frequently unpopular.

Then why the need to increase the debt ceiling if we are now paying as we go?
