WASHINGTON (AP) - The number of newly laid off workers filing claims for unemployment benefits unexpectedly rose last week as the recovery of the nation's battered labor market proceeds in fits and starts.
The Labor Department said Thursday that the number of new jobless claims rose to 480,000 last week, up 7,000 from the previous week. That was a worse performance than the decline to 465,000 that economists had expected.

Analysts believe that claims need to fall to about 425,000 for several weeks to signal the economy is actually beginning to add jobs.

How does Christmas help the December numbers or doesn't it? I was thinking in January there was going to be a spike in unemployment that was going to be explained away as post-Christmas temp help layoffs.
UE sits at 10+% while the Democrats and President Monkey are worried about climate change and a worthless health care bill. November 2010 cant get here fast enough for me.

It's a beeyitch, ain't it? In only 11 months we've left the Utopia we enjoyed for years.
President Monkey? What's that, the PC term for the 'N' word? Or is it you just don't have the 'nads?

Not only that - they're now worried about giving easy citizenship, a massive amnesty to tens of millions of illegals AND telling them they can start inviting in their long lost relatives. This amnesty is sure to bring in at least 100 million people in a very short time and only 5 million jobs were promised.

Sanrene, there are reports given weekly on the jobless claims. Surprisingly you ONLY focus on the increase of the jobless claims but NEVER on the decrease. hmmm
Here let me help you with the previous news you obviously missed.

The above goes to show the desperately overblown claims that insincere types are not just willing, but anxious to make on the basis of the merest and flimsiest of evidence. Weekly UI filings in December say nothing at all about what effect the stimulus has had since February, as will easily be shown by your claim that these numbers mean nothing at all should they decline to levels lower than expected next week...
PS. Did your article mention that the four-week moving average of new UI claims DECLINED again?

What matters is that we have an unemployment rate of 10%!!!!!! How a president can stay in office with numbers like that is beyond me. He should be impeached, or at the very least given a swift kick in the butt to start putting more focus and energy on jobs, instead of flitting around giving speeches and grandstanding.
