And what biblical character was sold as a sex slave, exactly?? And if it's full of sex and violence, shouldn't every liberal love it?
The reason you reduce it to "sex and violence" is because you don't understand it or the lessons it is trying to teach. Violence and sexuality are a part of life, as the authors of the bible well knew. It was also a history of the ancient Hebrews, and their authors did not attempt to hide or whitewash the very real problems of human nature that were part of every day life. Lessons were meant to be learned in the telling of these stories. Think about that the next time you decide to discount it all.
The bible is rich in metaphors, is beautifully written as any educated person will admit, and most of the Western literary canon draws heavily upon its symbolism. That is why my secular friends in college struggled so much with our classical literature classes, and why I breezed on through. I was familiar with the stories, the characters, and the deeper symbolism.
As John Gardner, perhaps the greatest and most beloved writing teacher of all time, said, "God is an uneven writer, but when He's good, nobody beats Him."
When you disparage the bible and discount its literary merit, you reveal yourself to be an uneducated fool. Most of the Lit majors I knew were liberal atheists, and I never heard a single one of them make the idiot comments that have been made on this thread here!
Take a lesson from those who know.
Beautifully written? It has incredibly inconsistent stories, skips around all over the place, puts in useless details while leaving out important ones, glorifies murderers, rapists, slave masters, genocidal maniacs, bigots, etc.
Have you actually read all of the bible, or just the psalms and the nice verses after they have been cherry-picked?
Personally I think there should be a warning label or a parental advisory sticker on every bible.

Yes I have read all of it. It never glorifies criminals. If you think it does, you are sadly confused. Try reading it yourself, rather than posting talking points you find on atheist websites.

I didn't say "criminals". Many of the "good guys" were slave owners, sexists, racists, even Moses was a genocidal murderer.
I have read it, and know these things because I have. It's interesting that you say you have read it but don't know these things.
trying to control people
pushing their belief sytem on others
hatred of religion
Not all liberals are like this, only the angry hateful radical ones
Why do you say things like this?
If, to use the OP's example, the student was reading the Communist Manifesto, do you think conservative teachers wouldn't try to control the student, pushing their belief system on others?
I mean - social conservatives spend all their time pushing their belief system on the rest of us - they want us to worship their god in schools and use government to further their religious agenda and undermine the scientific process.
I'm not saying it doesn't happen both ways, but at least have a little perspective.
The girl had every right to read the Bible an the teacher should be disciplined for their actions.
So, then, you would say the same if a child were reading Lolita? It's certainly within her rights. No laws prevent her.
I ask because both books have episodes of sex between a minor and an adult. If you accept one on the basis of legal rights, you must accept the other and hold teachers' discipline to the letter of the law and nothing more.
Kids could curse all day long and it's within their right.

If her parents are fine with it, who am I to say she can't.

No you ask because you want to trash the bible and religion. Let's not pretend that it is any other reason k?
