The Moon would be a convenient out-of-Earth's-atmosphere base that is not too far from Earth. It would allow us to build spacecraft that did not need such a large amount of fuel to get out into orbit too.
So from that point of view, it would be worthwhile. Although there would be many things to overcome it would force us to develop more space-orientated inventions and products.
I always thought Armstrong should have said, "I claim this land in the name of America," when he got out of the lunar lander. The USA could have divided the moon into states and although they would have a population and GDP of 0 they would make the USA be the largest nation in the world. If only...
I just do not see how we can NOT explore it further. Finding water on the moon IS a big darned deal and I am really surprised there is so little excitement about it. If our forefathers (and mothers) had been of the modern day mindset we would all live within an area of 10 square miles.
At some point in the future the moon would probably succeed from the USA liked the land Columbus claimed for Spain.
Maybe I was thinking Balboa.
"Finally he reached a top from where he could see the Pacific. When the others had joined him a Te Deum was chanted, a cross erected, and the sea was christened Mar del Sur (South Sea). He pushed on to the edge of the ocean, and Balboa claimed the ocean and all adjacent lands for Spain."
We won't need the moon. The human race won't make it another 100 years. Just gotta look at what's going on here. Spend the money on something else.
