In a triumph for the pharmaceutical industry, the Senate on Monday killed a drive to allow consumers to buy prescription drugs from abroad at a significant savings over domestic prices.
On a 49-40 vote, the Senate required the administration to certify the safety and effectiveness of imported drugs before they can be imported, a requirement that officials have said they cannot meet.
"Well, once again the big drug companies have proved that they are the most powerful and best financed lobby in Washington," said Sen. David Vitter, a Louisiana Republican.
The vote neutralized a second amendment, later passed on a voice vote, that would legalize the importation of prescription drugs manufactured in Canada, Australia, Europe, Japan and New Zealand.
Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., called the certification amendment, introduced by Sen. Thad Cochran, R-Miss., a "poison pill" for the drug-imports legislation. Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., acknowledged it nullified his bid to allow the purchase of drugs abroad.
Now why would the Senate vote against allowing the import of drugs? Is this is our government in action working in the best interest of our citizens? I thought our politicians voted for what is best for each American? Guess they voted for the profits of the pharmaceutical industry and they each will be given their kick backs later on. Looks like Big Business and Government are in bed together again at our costs.
I'm sure they claim to be concerned with our safety. LOL. That's a joke. They have never been concerned with our safety. They're only concerned about their own pockets. And the pharmaceutical industry is paying them well. Our pharmaceutical industry doesn't want competition from outside the US. Of course, if this did pass, it's possible we'd lose some jobs, but with this particular industry, I don't care. Fewer pharamceutical sales reps isn't a bad thing.
An answer to this is to stop taking prescription medications. Some people might feel they need them but most people don't. If the ones who don't, stop taking them, then this will increase the availability to those who think that they do. Less demand will result in lower prices for the drugs, and more competition and availability to provide them.
As an alternative, the only way to be truly healthy is take control of our own personal health. By living holistically we can take control away from the arrogant whims of the drug practitioners.
After all, this is the way it should be. The decisions for our lives should be made by us, not the profit motives of uncaring corporations. There is nothing more important to all of us than our health. It is time that we cast away the fishing lines of the crooks, take control of our lives and make all of these decisions for ourselves.

Americans are slowly becoming Hypochondriacs...and the drug companies are loving every minute of it. Every other commercial is advertising some new sort of pill for some new sort of ailment. Be smart...getting vitamins and minerals in veggies and fruits is the best cure.
Too many people in this country are forced to choose between purchasing expensive drugs or paying their rent. Heck, many of the drugs sold at the Canadian outlets are actually manufactured in the USA and they are still sold cheaper than the medicine at our own pharmacies.
This is just another example of how our government actually represents corporate interests over the interests of its citizens. If it was illegal for corporations to give money to policical campaigns this would have never occured.
And, if you check the big Board on Wall Street, the pharmaceutical industry subsidiaries and then compare these with investors, wouldn't it be a pretty list of collaborators. : (

I agree that alternative medicine is useful, and also agree that too many folks take prescription drugs that are unwarranted for their medical condition, but, and this is a big but, with the stranglehold on all medical practices, including pharmaceuticals, alternative drugs are not covered, and are often as or more costly than pharmaceuticals, over the counter or prescriptions. One bottle of glucosamine can cost as much as a script for an antibiotic.
We need a complete overhaul of the medical, pharmaceutical and alternative medicine system. It is broken, and needs urgent repair.

I agree with you, Ontheroad, but why bother to try and repair it. My point is there are two choices, either (1) fight within the system to try and change it to get what you want or (2) disengage from the system and do things your own way, so you always get what you want regardless what they do.
The practice of alternative medicine is just that, an alternative way of doing the same thing they are doing, and trying to change them to something they're not. In my opinion that's never going to work because as long as they are in power, they have the means to keep doing what they are doing and making more people sick as they do.
When enough of us start practicing holistic health and taking care of ourselves, then the medical hiearchies and drug organizations will have no more place in society, will stop being so pervasive and will disappear from the planet. The current system keeps getting worse. Rather than trying to fix it, we can create something much better for ourselves, and much better for humanity.
