HHS opens door to possibility of importing some drugs to drive down prices

The Trump administration is opening up the door to importing prescription drugs — at least in a limited number of cases.

The administration said Thursday that the Department of Health and Human Services will form a working group to look at the idea of importing drugs from other countries in cases in which there is a dramatic price increase for a drug produced by one manufacturer and not protected by patents or exclusivities.

...
The proposal is one of the boldest the administration has yet floated as it has laid out a series of ways to bring down the cost of prescription drugs. Although President Trump said on the campaign trail that he supports importing drugs from other countries as a way to lower prices for Americans, the notion has traditionally been more popular among Democrats.

They are looking to do this on a limited scale for scale. Sounds like a good experiment to me.

Don't they already do that?

I remember my mother was up in arms because they wanted to give her some garbage from China instead of something made in the states/Canada for something.

Wait, I am very confused. Isn't the cornerstone of Donald Trumps platform to bring businesses back to America, so Americans will have jobs ? Now he is proposing importing drugs, made elsewhere, that will compete with those made by Americans.

Am I missing something in this equation ?

No what they need to do is crack down on what insurance and pharmaceutical companies in our country charge for the same medication you can get cheaper in other countries

Sounds like a good plan. Maybe Trump will then realize that protectionism is bad for consumers.

A Republican doing something- ANYTHING- that will benefit consumers over billionaires?

I'll believe it when I see it.

Likely just another flash in the pan... move on to the next distraction.

Didnt they just arrest some women for having Fentanyl shipped from China? A months supply of this drug is around $700-800. in the US, I would bet its half that or less coming directly from China.

I guess they will get a pardon if Trump changes the rules.
