In another thread, a fellow City-Data member made a statement that pedophilia is another form of sexuality. I thought about it for a while, and agree and disagree with this statement.
I agree in the sense that pedophilia affects both heterosexuals and homosexuals at the same rate (meaning, homosexuals AREN'T more likely to be pedophiles than heterosexuals, and vice versa).
However, I doubt that all pedophiles are simply attracted to children (then again, I'm not very enlightened on this subject, so I could be wrong); meaning, they have a preference of girls over boys or vise versa. This WOULD mean that they are straight or gay to begin with, right? Furthermore, while pedophilia affects straights and gays justly, men are the vast majority of pedophiles. Why does this phoenomenon affect men more than women (then again, men also account for the majority of rape and murder cases as well...is there a link between the three? Who knows..).
So while I'm unsure, I'm leaning more to pedophilia not being a sexuality.

Extra: Are pedophiles born that way, or is it learned? If they are born that way, would pedophilia be an orientation? If they AREN'T born that way, can they be changed, or is it like a scar? Just a thought.
There is no cure for pedophilia, they never stop until they are stopped. Sick and twisted souls who cause great pain and don't care. They should be lined up and shot dead.

Adult ex-victims--real or not--who want attention or want to swindle some diocese out of some money, and other people with a book to sell or an axe to grind, go on Oprah and similar intellectual swampholes routinely. They get the attention.
How would you react if a 35-year-old said: "Yeah, Uncle so-and-so fondled me when I was a kid. I thought it was icky and gross. I haven't thought much about it since." That's a much more common reaction in real life, but it's not exactly a ratings magnet, is it?
You know what. You can sit there at your computer and make all the excuses for these sick ba***rds all you want. And you can sit there and mock the victims and call them names all you want. But one thing you can't do is to think you are fooling anyone here. I just want you to know I can see through your mask.
Pedophiles are nothing but two legged varmints. The biggest difference twixt them and the four legged kind is that they both need and deserve killing. Most of the time, the four legged ones don't really deserve it so much, but you need to kill them anyway. I would have no problem watching a pedophiles head explode like a squished cherry while stopping a 300 grain jacketed hollow point. To me, they are lower than whale s***. I have more feeling for a rattlesnake in my bedroll than I could muster for these life sucking verminous piles of sewage. There is NO defense for a pedophile. Trying to say that these pondscums 'urges' is another form of sexuality? That is a ludicrous idea. If it looks like a skunk and smells like a skunk, well, it must be a skunk.
Pedophilia is a mental disorder of the worst kind as the pedophile not only engages in rape of a child but then convinces himself that his victim needed it, enjoyed it and/or wanted it.
They are predatory and no doubt have little if any capacity for empathy. They should not be trusted in society.
Pedophilia is not considered by knowledgeable psychologists as a "sexual orientation", but as a sexual pathology (or paraphilia.) It is hard-wired, however--however that may happen--and is not considered a curable condition.
That being stated, three other things ought to be considered:
1. Some pedophiles never become offenders, preferring to carry out their interest via self-stimulation.
Yes, these are people that still have the capacity to understand that they are sexually and socially deviant. If they use child porn in order to get off then they are criminals and deserve a long prison sentence.
2. While pedophilia is not a "curable" condition, that has nothing to do with the frequently invoked claims that "sex offenders always reoffend." Not ever sex offender is a pedophile; not every pedophile is a sex offender; and the notion that no sex offenders avoid reoffending is as ludicrous as the claim that no alcoholics remain sober.
First of all lets make a distinction between sex offenders and pedophiles. Sex offenders can include everything from rapists to a flasher and really has no point in this particular discussion.
Now as to pedophiles - sorry but they do have the highest recidivism rates.
3. The white-hot hatred, including lethal hatred, expressed toward pedophiles by many undereducated, uninformed people in Anglo-American influenced cutures is no more appropriate or sane than a simlar hatred directed at someone suffering from Alzherimer's Syndrome, bipolar disorder or schizophrenia. It is an appalling misdirection of emotional energy, to put it mildly.
What do you mean "anglo-american influenced culture'? Are you saying blacks welcome pedophilia? If so I would invite you to read what happened to Maya Angelous childhood rapist in "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings".
It also bears noting that unlike Alzeheimers patients, pedophiles hurt people. Alzeheimers patients do not. Pedophiles actively seek out the most vulnerable in our society and deliberatley with forethought either groom them into being victims or out and out abduct and rape them.
I just visited a home for Alzeheimers patients this past Wednesday and I assure you those ladies who were tied to their chairs so they wouldn't fall over are not threats to society.
As to schizophrenics --- if a schizophrenic harmed an innocent person/child sexually and/or physically hell yes that person is a threat to society regardless of his mental condition. One thing that pedophiles and schizophrenics have in common is their resistence to 'cure' their conditions. And yes, that makes them potentially dangerous.
