"Government Report: H1N1 Poses 'Serious' Health Threat to U.S."
Monday, August 24, 2009
The H1N1 flu poses a serious health threat to the United States, the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology said in a report released Monday.
"The report says the current strain 'poses a serious health threat' to the nation. The issue is not that the virus is more deadly than other flu strains, but rather that it is likely to infect more people than usual because it is a new strain against which few people have immunity," the White House said.
U.S. officials should help drug companies speed up the supply of swine flu vaccines to have at least some available to start vaccinating people by mid-September instead of mid-October as scheduled, White House science advisers said.
