With all the latest of Russia's saber rattling finally moving into a somber state, it remains locked in a battle over unpaid bills with the Ukraine and has shut off all gas supplies to the region. As has been discussed here, one of Russia's most naked vulnerabilities is it reliance upon its petroleum as one of its primary sources of income.
On the other hand, China is much better economically able to continue to grow in the midst of growing economic tensions. While still very much reliant upon foreign sources of energy, China seeks to expand its markets into Africa and strengthen its ties with Iran.
China is expected to have a greater GDP than the US by 2050.

Chinese power has also increased considerably in military, geopolitical, trade and financial affairs. Some experts have even contemplated the possibility of China becoming the world’s greatest power, overtaking the US. For instance, Goldman Sachs has predicted that China’s GDP will surpass America’s sometime circa 2050.
Sadly, I think it's a total crap shoot tie.
Both worst case scenarios rely on multiple outside factors, almost too many that are equally unpredictable.
China is colonizing parts of Africa and the North American West Coast, they've made massive inroads in Latin America as well. They are an elite in Singapore and Malaysia too.
Russia? As long as it isn't Communist, we need to become their allies and vice-versa. The Communist period notwithstanding, Russia has always been a Western nation and an ally of the United States.
PS - Russia is a long ways from regain its military prowess but China has the money and the manpower to become a true super power. Its naval foray into the Horn of Africa is just a glimpse of its burgeoning global reach.

I see two different meanings to "bigger treat" Who would do I think is STRONGER from a military stand point? China...Who do I think we're more likely to go to war or have a conflict with? Russia...They're still mad about Georgia and sent they military ships to Cuba...Also their allied with N. Korea and Venezuela...
The biggest threat is a China-Russia coalition. Pieces were already in place, and ties between them has only increased over last 2-3 years.
