Can I be the token status quo messenger and say "it can't happen here"?

What? It's happened in countless developed societies, even our own (1176 and 1861 anyone)? Well...uh...uh...it's different now...nope...can't happen...too many checks/balances...too many ignorant folks...nope...

Status quo proponents (probably the same people who thought we'd just have a mild slowdown a couple of years ago), feel free to continue where I left off.
