TAMPA, Fla. - Chip Witte doesn't consider himself a Rebel. He doesn't hang Dixie battle flags in his living room, nor does he wear one on the back of his leather jacket.
Yet when the Tampa motorcycle mechanic saw the world's largest Confederate battle flag unfurl above the intersection of I-10 and I-4 in June, he felt a jolt of solidarity with the lost cause and lost rights that he says the battle flag represents. "I think it's great that they're allowed to fly it," says Mr. Witte. Despite years of boycotts, schoolyard bans, and banishment from capitol domes, the Southern battle colors are flying, higher than ever.
Does it represent a lost cause and lost rights or something else? I don’t see anything lost when I view the confederate flag, I see something else, and I see people who feel angry. I could be wrong but it’s amazing what others might feel when they see the flag.
If the Southern battle colors were still fighting today ~ what would they be fighting for or against?
would you not be angry if you were attacked, and as a result, 600,000 americans were killed, over something that could have been settled with something as easy as purchasing the slaves freedom. how come we were the only ones who had to fight a freaking civil war over the issue? just buy the slaves freedom. it's cheaper, and it saves us 600,000 people.

Not to mention that research leads one to believe that the war was more over state's rights than anything. The North (federal government) used the slaves as a convenient and worthy cause for war. The South was not merely fighting to keep slavery. They were fighting to preserve the rights of the state handed down to them in the Constitution. See our version of government is very different than was planned. The Federal Government was supposed to remain small, while State Government handled most of the affairs of the Union. But the Feds grew in strength and sought to usurp the powers of the State in favor of a strong federal government. Thus the war was fought, and not solely over slavery as is the popular version of the story. The freeing of the slaves was never the less a wonderful outcome of the war, since no human on this earth has a right to own and control another human. But it was not the leading cause of the war.
I find it hilarious that people that fly the confederate flag are still going on about "the war of northern aggression". But they people are so quick to tell black people "get over slavery. It happen over 100 years ago. Move on!!!!!!!!"
How about you drop the flag? It happen over 100 years ago. Move on!!!!!
government education teaches otherwise. when I was in school, it was always taught that it was over slavery. you don't even need to dig too deep to figure out otherwise. how ironic that if they would have just purchased the slaves freedom, we could have possibly avoided the huge mess that is our federal government, of our so called "united states." haha, unity forced through the barrel of a gun doesn't sound like unity to me, nor does it sound like freedom.

I find it funny that there are people that actually think like this. funny, but not surprising.

AAAHHHH- A most beautiful sight indeed. If the south only won, might states had more rights and feds less, might we not be in the trouble we are in today. One can only dream, since the feds did win and your rights have been squandered away at an alarming and increasing rate. God Bless all the Confederate souls who fought in the civil war.

You are dead on correct about our government approved education. They conveniently leave out big parts of history that might make kids question the motives of the Feds. And black people all around have the right to know that the government wasn't just fighting for their well being. Just like more young black people should be made aware that white people were not the only ones to own slaves. There were many cases of freed slaves who then established their own lives and also owned slaves. While there were far more whites that owned slaves, it was not solely the whites who owned slaves. A lot about the our history has been twisted to present this beautiful picture of a triumph over tyranny and oppression. Things just weren't that clean cut.

The civil war was not about slavery, it was about states rights. Do you really think 600,000 men would die for slavery? Come on.
