Remember when they were making the same argument against Japan in the 70's and 80's? Now, ask yourself if your choices as a consumer are improved because of brands like Toyota and Honda. It's the same deal with the Chinese brands now. They build really good cars for less money. That's just true. Take a ride in a Chinese luxury car like the NEO ET9 sometime and then ride in a Cadillac Escalade. I promise you that you will come away from that experience convinced that the Chinese car drives better in every respect. Because it does...
And priced at $12K no less....an affordable car.

Japan went from being a cheap importer of goods to high quality stuff. China can do it too.

Guess you never saw China’s Electric Car graveyard.

How can they be such great and wonderful cars, when they cannot even sell them in their own country?

Graveyards like this say otherwise. It's not just graveyards piled up with EVs, China has many other graveyards with other mass produced crap that no one wants.

Chinese designed/made cars are "better"?

I have driven 5 or 6 different mid range ICE Chinese cars from overseas airport rental pools over the years. I avoid the cheap econo compact range from rentals, and always opt for the mid range.

I was so unimpressed with all of them, I made it a point to avoid Chinese cars after a while.

Poor fit/finish, buzzy low powered engines, odd transmission gear timing, voice prompts in Mandarin, lack of configurability in electronic cabin controls, poor dash instrument viewing due to bad design and sunlight, etc.......

My last Chinese car rental was in 2022 in Doha, Qatar. Never again, much less buy one to own.

You would drive a $12k Chinese EV? Besides, by the time it meets all U.S. safety standards it will be $36k.

The sleeping dragon has woken up.

The top 10 EV vehicles sold in 2023 belonged to Tesla and BYD

How quickly people forget that US entry level cars used to cost that much

You have become so used to high prices that low prices scares you off...

Made in china means it's low grade crap, slapped together with the cheapest materials and workmanship, to last the consumer only long enough, so that to return it would become to expensive, time consuming and too much of a hassle, that the consumer would rather not deal with it, and just buy new.

The common Chinese manufacturing industry model is to steal ideas and and intellectual property where you can steal, substitute the cheapest materials, and cut corners on assembly and construction where possible and still get the product to work for at least a few hours.

This article was written in 2010, nothing has changed.

Made in China = Piece of Junk

the American worker in this case applies to many more than the auto industry. Who are these tariiffs protecting?

Less competition means higher prices for the consumer.

US state and federal patent protections, and manufacturing regulations which mandate that proper environmental, worker safety and manufacturing procedures are followed. We also have consumer protection laws underpinning all of that. In the US we expect a safe product that does not defraud the consumer, harm the workers or poison the environment. China's government has barely any worker safety laws, no real environmental laws, and they don't care about the American consumer.
