Most of Eastern Europe, having been run from Moscow for decades, jumped at the chance of that not happening again and clamored for NATO membership. In the 1990s, Western Europe, naively, thought the time for detente had finally come and started relaxing their defensive postures. Recently declassified documents make it clear just how naive - Yeltsin tried to convince Clinton that Russia would be happy to "take over the responsibility for Europe's security", which I'm convinced is true for Putin as well.
Russia's actions in Ukraine has woken Europe up to the fact that a bunch of small countries with a large, poor, and aggressive neighbor either form alliances or fall separately. (Russia is aware of this dynamic, of course.) The realization that hey, Russia can't actually turn off the heat in Europe, of course helped.
In the aftermath of the Ukraine invasion, NATO is dusting off the cobwebs, re-investing and training armed forces, and adding member states. Opposition to NATO membership has dropped - as a Danish left-winger put it, "We're still principally opposed, but we're not leaving now."

Honestly, if it wasn't for Turkey's proximity to Russia and their access to the Black Sea, would there have been a reason to include them in NATO?
That's called realpolitik. Erdogan is temporary, the Bosporus is permanent.

Worth noting: Ruzzia SAYS there were 65 POWs on board. Nevermind that it doesn't really make sense to transport POWs in this fashion. Also never mind that some of the listed POWs had actually already been exchanged to Ukraine. Also nevermind that it probably wouldn't be too smart to transfer an order of magnitude more POWs than available guards/crew. All in all, looks like it's just another Ruzzian lie, which is expected, because Ruzzia always lies. "O no don't shoot down our planes they are all full of your POWs!"
Similar theme: Remember when a "storm" sunk the Moskova?

A Russian military transport plane crashed Wednesday in a border region near Ukraine, and Moscow accused Kyiv of shooting it down, saying all 74 people aboard were killed, including 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war headed for a swap. Russia offered no evidence and Ukraine did not immediately confirm or deny it.
... And now Russia pouts, saying, "If ya'll gonna continue shooting down our airplanes, we're just not gonna DO any more swaps!"
It's amazing how many new outlets carry the story of a plane load of Ukrainian prisoners. Or is it?..... It seems like whatever Russia says is simply passed on as "information".
Typical, is the story of Russia's finances as delivered to the world by World Bank. Russia delivers what it wants to say and World Bank repeats it. Then it is picked up by NPR and everyone else and delivered as "gospel".
It's all nonsense and economists at Yale know it. Inflation in Russia is not 3.6% as reported by Russia - it's 60% as calculated by Yale (LINK).
And that airplane, capable of carrying 250 soldiers, did not carry 65 captured Ukrainian soldiers.

The key is was the aircraft announced as a diplomatic prisoner exchange flight? And if it was did that information get to every battery in Ukraine to let it pass unmolested. So a fire control breakdown. Or is someone suggesting that Ukraine did the math of an aircraft versus their prisoners. Remember the US sunk over 20 ships carrying POWs when fighting Japan.
