Welcome to "tax and bribe" America.
If you vote for them, they will pay you off.
... stealing from others, via the power of government taxation.

Basically the Dept of Education has been failing in everything they do for years. This is regardless of which party is in power. I give that agency a big fat F.

There are two major reasons college got more expensive over the last 20-30 years unrelated to basic inflation.

1. The states started removing subsidies.

2. The colleges got fancier. My dorm room was a 2 person cinder-block box without air conditioning with one common bathroom for 80 people. My kids had their own room, shared a bathroom with one other person and had AC.

Victims should be compensated by the wrongdoer (the colleges, in this case) and not by innocent third parties (taxpayers.)

We're not innocent. Our government handed out that money. They should have verified the legitimacy of those colleges.

Would you just send money to a match book college without checking their credentials ?

The DOE and student loan dept have got to buckle down and start validating who they are sending money to.

We're talking over $1 billion that our government just handed over to scam colleges.

Allow me to do a 180...in this case. The government was the lender as well as being complicit so I do see cancellation as being the right move.

As i see it, this is not much different from the government giving the money to the student, who can spend it on whatever they please.

To lure the disenchanted Bernie Sander's crowd into voting for Biden, they were expecting him to adopt some of their favorite projects, Number 1, canceling some or all student debt. So this move was to appease the Sander's crowd, IMO.

Agreed. I’m okay with consumer protection which this seems to be the case here. I wish people were a bit more wise in their choices and these fraudsters should spend time in jail.
