Regal should have been building OUTDOOR movie theaters which have become the rage. You sit in your car, you enjoy the movie and no contact with anyone. The only time would be when you got your popcorn, which should be a vending machine. Everything comes from a machine. No human contact. They had to know people would be too afraid to attend the cinemas. Think ahead in life.
I haven't been to a movie theater since the 80's so the decision is of no concern to me. The bottom line is people do not feel comfortable in crowded venues be it a movie theater or an airplane. Why pay employees when revenue won't cover costs? Better to shut them down.
On top of that movies aren't gonna be big blockbuster films anymore, as the studios will sit on those till Coronavirus passes so they can actually make a profit in theatre's as a result even for those brave enough to go to the theaters don't expect any "good" films to be playing.

It's been a while for my husband and I but not as long as that. I just looked up the last move we saw in the theater and it was 2015. I suspect theaters have been struggling in the last few years anyway with all the streamng services and big screen TVs - it has become so expensive to go to a movie in a theatr and it's even less worht it now.
