Not an American but strong ties to the USA, will say -> I think it's time for a peaceful split. The two countries can maintain some kind of union and framework for mutual defense and trade (each side will send their tax dollars to fund a military responsible for both) but other than that, they will get to decide their own domestic and economic policies. The only issue I see here is the debt - who gets that?
It is likely to happen through secession sooner or later. Our divided and disunited nation cannot continue on like this. National divorce is in our future, I doubt it will be done peacefully by a vote in congress or at the ballot box. Dark times may be near.
I don't think that will happen. The US is moving in the right direction as the hard core conservatives shrink in numbers talk of violent secession will be for the history books.
Can't be done with a "treaty." The only constitutional way for a state to leave the union would be to pass a constitutional amendment and have 3/4ths of the 49 other states to vote to let that state leave. Isn't going to happen.
2/3 of the House and Senate would have to vote in favor and then 3/4 of states would need to ratify it. Alternatively, 2/3 of all state legistures could call for a constitutional convention.
Let's say Congress by tonight does a treaty to split the country into 2 nation-states
Should we accept it or would you protest?
As long as there was a "grace period" for people to migrate to the nation of their choosing. I have no interest in living in the fundamentalist Christian North Korea that the conservative side would become.
If there was ever a question that we are more divided now than at any time since the Civil War the existence of this thread is the proof. And it all happened when President Orange showed up on the scene, this is not a coincidence.
I would say it happened the day same-sex marriage was legalized if not a little bit before. It was definitely at some point during Obama's second term.

True. So the rest of us - which is a majority - need to consolidate to bring back the middle and mainstream America, before it becomes impossible. The specifics don't need to be ironed out this very moment, but we do need to recognize that as a beginning point.
