They knew who he was and that he was a local public official and therefore knew it was not a dangerous person or situation. This is not some huge urban crime area, it is a small community. The public official knew the people being questioned and if they had been with him during whatever "suspcious" activity that supposedly took place, then it would behoove them to also speak with the local public official to get information about the supposed suspicious activity.

He needed to take a back seat to what was going on. Who cares that he is a public official, he's a nobody and gets treated like everyone else. All he had to do was do what he was told and wait until they came to speak to him. The situation wasn't his to control.
