I heard him interviewed on local radio when he was a guest dignitary at a World War Two Weekend Air Show. He was quite a gentleman and had some amazing stories.

I say Thank You! to Dutch and every other member of the crews of the Enola Gay and Bockscar as well as to Harry Truman for ordering the missions that brought a swift end to WWII and saved both American and Japanese lives by making an invasion of the Japanese mainland unnecessary.

Right on! My father had been in Europe. When that battle front ended in April 1945 he was shipped back to the east coast, and was on a train headed west for deployment for the planned invasion of Japan when the Japanese surrendered. I believe that he was in Kansas City when they got the news, and pretty soon was able to head home to Fort Worth.
An invasion of Japan would have been very, very ugly.
