I was going to post this in the military section but I can just image the angry responses i'd get.I was reading the oct issue of american legion(I dont subscribe but i see an issue laying around sometime and ill thumb through it) they're building a bunch of new va hospitals and of course they are all grossly over budget. one is has 200 rooms and is close to a billons dollars!!! another is over a billion and will have a staff of 2400!!
i know vets need a hostipal but godsak stop wasting our tax dollars like this.
I think if you will do a little research you will find that these are "regional" hospitals. Most communities only have a VA clinic which is extremely limited in capability. If you look into the civilian equivalent I think you will also see similar expenditures. Most civilian facilities will not accept VA because the government will not pay what they feel is adequate for their services. What are the alternatives? I have always been treated well and with respect by the VA but my one grievance has always been the lack of availability of civilian comparable facilities.
I wonder if it would have been cheaper to use the VA as a personal insurance to be used at networked local area doctor's and hospitals instead of building more and more clinics.

My Dear Ol' (dearly departed) Ma had "Tricare for Life", a medical "plan" that paid her bills pretty much JUST as you suggest above. She went to the doctors she wanted to go to and Tricare (and medicare?) paid for the visit.
This was NOT as it was supposed to be.
In the deep distant past, Congress or the Defense Department tried to get soldiers to either join or re-up. One of the enticements they used was "free medical care for you and your dependents!". My father re-upped. However, the military didn't keep their side of the bargain; their medical services were so overused by active duty soldiers that dependents and retirees had essentially infinite waits for service.
So the vets/dependents sued. And won.
Rather than expand their OWN medical services, however, the Defense Department or someone decided the winners could just go to whatever doctors and have their bills paid. It worked out REAL well for my DOM.
I do not know how that cost compared to the cost of providing their own services.

Ummm... It's the government doing it, it will be 3x overbudget and 2x longer than predicted, it will be massively over staffed with supervisory and management staff and understaffed with caregivers.
And it'll still get praised as 'wonderful'.
And my father died in a VA Hospital, while they stood around and watched. After he died, they cut him open and said "Oh, well, we could have just given him a shot and ... He'd still be alive today.

Always 2-3 x over budget with govt projects.
Orlando VA was 2x over budget and like 2 years behind schedule. While private children hospital started 1 year earlier and opened 1 year before the VA.

In one of my past positions, I worked for a private health insurance company that processed VA claims. The vast majority are denied -- that COULD be paid -- because the VA does not file them correctly. SO we are giving free medical care to veterans with insurance where insurance COULD pay because the VA does not know how to fill out claims properly. I imagine the VA is losing billions per year because of this, for no reason.
In my current position, I work closely with the VA, and it is a valuable resource for so many people. We need the VA. I just wish it could be run more efficiently.
