The report found that most uninsured Americans have no savings. In fact, the median financial assets for all uninsured families arejust$20. Even among higher income families, assets are low. Half of families with income at 400 percent of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL), or $89,400 a year for a family of four in 2011, have financial assets below $4,100.
There are approximately 2 million annual hospital admissions of the uninsured. Of those, 58 percent rack up bills in excess of $10,000. Uninsured families can, on average, afford to pay the full bills for only about 12 percent of the hospital stays they might experience

Yet another misinformed article with an obvious agenda that fails to consider that everyone is entitled to charity care or a sliding fee schedule, it's the law. Again, how do you explain illegal aliens being able to get away with not paying a single dime on $10,000 surgeries and have no Medicaid or insurance?

Unless your middle name is Jesus and you can heal the sick you can't and we can't do it all.
There is a system in place for poverty cases. They will get care, but if the disease is chronic, there will be no million dollars a year going to extra-ordinary care.
Lots of older people coming down the road and they can't expect millions to cure their cancers out of some money tree.
There is a term for all this. Dying with dignity!

The whole premise of uninsured Americans not being able to afford hospital care.
They can't afford preventative care. They also can't afford annual check ups and going in for what seem to be minor illnesses. The only time they can afford to go in, is when they CAN'T afford to avoid the hospital/doctor anymore.
So I agree with the article (even though I know from just talking to people) that many Americans can't afford healthcare. I just had this discussion last night with friends.

So you're saying they can afford it? Afford means the ability to pay for.
Pay involves ... money, usually. The article is about how they can't afford care, not what free government stuff they might be able to get. And how much we're absorbing because of it.
